ISLAMABAD: The Government has decided to shut down approximately 1,500MW inefficient power plants on a phased basis keeping in view surplus electricity in the country.
A meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Energy (CCOE) was convened under the chairmanship of Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Asad Umar in Islamabad.
During the meeting, the committee considered a suggestion of the Power Division regarding the shutting down of low-efficiency power plants. The Committee after detailed deliberations/discussion approved the suggestions for the closure of inefficient plants on a phased basis. The committee also directed Power Division to work out the exact dates for closers of these power plants.
Cabinet Committee on Energy(CCE) also considered a proposal of the Power Division for a waiver of a minimum 66% Take-or-Pay commitment in PPAs and GSAs of three RLNG plants. This proposal is a part of the government’s efforts to generate electricity through the most economical sources and declining reliance on relatively expensive ones. The CCE directed Power Division as well as the Finance Division to continue further deliberations/discussions to make sure that both electricity and gas sectors are able to meet their demand & supply requirements without any interference.
Minister for Energy Omar Ayub Khan, Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Shibli Faraz, SAPM on Petroleum Nadeem Babar, and a senior official of various divisions attended the meeting.
