PM Pakistan declares Rs1,113 billion to rebuild Karachi

KARACHI    –   Prime Minister of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan Imran Khan declared a historic Rs 1,113 billion package under the Karachi Transformation Plan to resolve the lasting and chronic issues of the port city, including the provision of clean drinking water, cleaning of drains, and sewage and solid waste disposal within three years. This day called a historic day for the people of Karachi.

Imran Khan arrives at flood-hit Karachi on Saturday where he presided a high-level meeting to review the flood situation and other administrative affairs. Later on, while speaking to a press conference, the PM Imran Khan disclosed details of the mega-development plan for Karachi keeping in view the present unstoppable heavy rain which distress the city.

PM apprised both the Federal and Provincial governments would take part in the entire package. Governor Sindh Imran Ismail and Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, federal and provincial ministers, and a number of legislators were also present on this historic occasion.

In order to enhanced coordination and implementation of the historic package, PM Imran Khan informed, it was agreed upon to set up a Provincial Coordination and Implementation Committee (PCIC) with all the stakeholders on board to punctually and swiftly resolve the blazing issues of Karachi.

As per information, out of total Rs 1,113 billion of the development package, Rs 92 billion would be spent on water supply projects, while Rs 141 billion would be used-up on sewage treatment, Rs 267 billion on solid waste management, stormwater drains clearance, and resettlement, Rs 41 billion for roads and Rs 572 billion for mass transit, rail and road transport.

Entitling it ‘a remarkable day’ for Karachi, the premier told the country was already going through the Covid-19 pandemic when it was hit by flash floods triggered by unusual seasonal rainfall. “The floods have hardly hit different areas of Balochistan, interior Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including Swat and Chitral. At present, the country has been passing through another test,” he said

The PM Imran Khan apprised Karachi also observed unprecedented heavy rainfall, which caused destruction and uttered the resolve that they would mutually tackle all the issues.

As per the short, medium, and long terms plans, drains would be completely cleaned, while the provincial government had taken the responsibility to rehabilitate the displaced people from the illegal encroachments, he said. He further added main issues like the sewage system and solid waste, transport, circular railway, and roads for Green Line would be fully resolved under the package everlastingly.
